A dog meat restaurant owner in Thoi Binh District, Ca Mau Province, southern Viet Nam, succumbed to rabies after getting a dog bite 5 months ago, the provincial Center for Disease Control announced on Wednesday [14 Feb 2024].

[H], a 57-year-old dog meat restaurant owner in Tan Phu Commune, Thoi Binh District, did not seek rabies vaccination despite being bitten by a rabid dog. On 8 Feb 2024 he started to feel fatigued, developed a fever, experienced tremors, and attempted self-medication without any relief. His condition worsened by 10 Feb 2024, prompting his family to
take him to Ca Mau General Hospital, where he was diagnosed with rabies.

Following treatment until 11 Feb 2024, his family sought a transfer to the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases, where doctors reaffirmed the diagnosis of rabies for the man. After understanding his incurable condition, the family opted to bring [H] home, where he
passed away on 12 Feb 2024.
2024年2月11日まで治療を受けた後、家族はHo Chi Minh市の熱帯病病院への転院を求めたが、医師は狂犬病の診断を下した。不治の病であることを理解した家族はHを自宅に連れ帰ることを選択し、2024年2月12日にHは息を引き取った。
Epidemiological investigation revealed that [H] had been selling dog meat for around 20 years and was bitten by a dog he purchased from a street vendor 5 months prior.
疫学調査の結果、Hは20年ほど前から犬肉を販売しており、5ヵ月前に露天商から購入した犬に咬まれていたことが判明した。

["There is currently no effective treatment for rabies after clinical signs appear. However, the disease is preventable through vaccination either before or immediately after an exposure. Rabies kills more than 70 people in Viet Nam each year, and most of rabies cases in the country are caused by the bite of rabid dogs."

The circumstances surrounding the non-healthcare-seeking behavior by the victim is worth emphasizing for health education purpose in this specific community. It can be argued that the bite was unknown to other family members, who could have insisted on post-exposure
prophylaxis. Lessons learned from other fatal cases could also be compiled and used to advocate for rabies prevention and control. -Mod.ST
