There were 6 cases of ferret-badgers infected with rabies in Miaoli County in 1 year, and Dahu Township recently reported a case for the 1st time.

Two more cases of ferret-badger rabies were recently reported in Tai'an Township and Dahu Township, Miaoli County. Among them, the 1st detection in Dahu Township was the 6th case of rabies accumulated in 1 year after the Da'an River defense line was lost. It is currently limited to ferret-badgers, wild animals in mountainous areas.

The Animal and Plant Inspection and Quarantine Service of the Ministry of Agriculture commissioned the Taichung Wildlife Conservation Society to pick up ferret and badger carcasses in Tai'an Township and Dahu Township, Miaoli County on 1 and 5 Jan 2024, respectively, and send them to the Veterinary Research Institute of the Ministry of
Agriculture for examination. They were recently confirmed to be positive for rabies virus. This case is also the 1st time ferret-badger rabies has been detected in Dahu Township.

The Miaoli County Animal Protection and Epidemic Prevention Office pointed out that an animal rabies epidemic broke out in China in 2013. The National Animal Protection and Inspection Office monitored that ferret-badgers captured in Zhuolan Town and Tai'an Township of Miaoli County in January last year [2023], and in Nanzhuang Township in November last year [2023], tested positive for rabies virus. In addition, 2 cases of ferret and badger carcasses were detected in January this year [2024], and the county has accumulated 6 cases in 4 townships, including 2 cases in Zhuolan Town, 2 cases in Tai'an Township, 1 case in Nanzhuang Township and 1 case in Dahu Township, all are confined to ferret-badgers in mountainous areas. No one has been bitten. So far, no dogs or cats that live close to humans have been found to be infected with rabies. In the case of the virus, people do not need to panic too much, but they still need to be vigilant.
