The Pingtung County Animal Quarantine Station issued a press release today [24 Mar 2025] stating that Fenggang Village, Fangshan Township reported on the evening of 17 Mar 2025 that a resident was bitten by a badger, and the badger was tested positive for rabies. This is the 2nd case of wild animal rabies in Fangshan Township and the 3rd case on the Hengchun Peninsula this year [2025]. The county government will add rabies vaccination sessions in Fangshan Township on 31 Mar 2025, and calls on owners to bring their dogs and cats for vaccination.
屏東県動物検疫所は本日（2025年3月24日）プレスリリースを発表し、方山郷楓港村の住民が2025年3月17日夜、アナグマに咬まれ、そのアナグマは狂犬病陽性であったと発表した。これは方山郷で2例目、恒春半島で3例目の野生動物の狂犬病である。県政府は2025年3月31日に方山郷で狂犬病ワクチンの追加接種を実施することとしており、飼い主に対して犬や猫を連れて接種を受けるよう呼びかけている。
The Animal Health and Prevention Center reminds that there are 13 townships in Pingtung County that are rabies-positive areas, and 7 of them have confirmed cases of people being scratched and bitten by rabid ferret badgers. If the public is accidentally scratched or bitten by a suspected rabid animal, they should rinse with soap and water and disinfect the wound with iodine, then seek medical attention as soon as possible, and actively inform the doctor to facilitate diagnosis and treatment. If dead ferret badgers, white-nosed mongooses, crab-eating mongooses and other carnivorous wild animals are found, they can be reported to the Animal Health and Prevention Center for testing.
動物衛生予防センターは、屏東県には狂犬病陽性地域が13あり、そのうち7地域で狂犬病のイタチアナグマに引っかかれたり咬まれたりした事例が確認されていることを注意喚起している。もし市民が狂犬病の疑いがある動物にうっかり引っかかれたり咬まれたりした場合は、すぐに石けんと水で傷口を洗い、ヨウ素で消毒し、できるだけ早く医療機関を受診するとともに、医師にその旨を積極的に伝えて、診断と治療が円滑に行えるようにしてください。イタチアナグマ、シロハナマングース、カニクイマングースなどの肉食野生動物の死骸を発見した場合は、検査のために動物衛生予防センターに連絡することができる。
The Animal and Plant Protection Agency mentioned that the rabies epidemic in wild animals has continued to spread in recent years. Rabies is a zoonotic infectious disease with a mortality rate of 100%. The agency called on the public to be vigilant and abide by the "two no's and one must" principle, not to contact wild animals, not to abandon pets, and to take dogs, cats and carnivores for rabies vaccination every year to prevent rabies together.
動植物防疫検疫局は、近年野生動物における狂犬病の流行が拡大し続けていると述べた。狂犬病は致死率100%の人獣共通感染症であり、同局は国民に対して警戒を怠らず、「二つの禁止と一つの義務」の原則、野生動物に接触しないこと、ペットを捨てないこと、犬・猫・肉食動物に毎年狂犬病ワクチンを接種させること、を守り、みんなで狂犬病を防止するよう呼びかけた。
Fangshan Township detected rabies in wild animals for the first time on 12 Mar 2025. The Animal Prevention and Control Station has added free rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon on 28 Mar 2025 at the Lion Gathering Hall in Shizi Township, and from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm at Jiahe Fude Palace in Fangshan Township; and will start a total of 14 free rabies vaccination in Shizi Township in early April [2025].
2025年3月12日、方山郷は初めて野生動物の狂犬病を検出した。動物防疫管理所は、獅子郷の獅子会堂では2025年3月28日午前10時30分から正午12時まで、方山郷の嘉和福徳宮では午後1時30分から午後3時まで、犬と猫の無料での狂犬病追加予防接種を実施し、4月上旬[2025]には獅子郷で計14回の無料での狂犬病追加予防接種を開始する予定である。

The Pingtung County government will increase rabies vaccinations for cats and dogs on 31 Mar 2025 in Fang-shan where a person was bitten by a ferret badger a week ago. The animal later tested positive for rabies. This is the 2nd case of rabies in wild animals in Fangshan Township this year [2025] and the 3rd case on the Hengchun Peninsula. County officials say they will hold an additional rabies vaccination clinic in Fangshan Township a week from today [24 Mar 2025] and urge pet owners to bring their dogs and cats for the shot.
屏東県政府は、2025年3月31日に1週間前にヒトがイタチアナグマに咬まれた枋山郷で犬猫の狂犬病予防接種を強化すると発表した。これは2025年に入って枋山郷で2件目の野生動物の狂犬病陽性例であり、恒春半島全体では3件目である。県当局は、2025年3月24日から1週間後に枋山郷で追加の狂犬病ワクチン接種会場を設ける予定であり、飼い主に対して犬や猫を接種に連れてくるよう呼びかけている。
There are currently 13 townships in Pingtung that are rabies-positive areas, and among them, 7 townships have had confirmed cases of rabies-infected ferret badgers biting people. Officials say if someone is accidentally bitten by a suspected rabid animal, they should wash the wound with soap and water, disinfect it with iodine, and seek medical attention as soon as possible.

"Kaohsiung's Agriculture Bureau announced on Wednesday (5 Mar 2025) that 2 ferret badgers tested positive for rabies this year (2025), intensifying vaccination efforts for dogs and cats in areas where these animals were found. The bureau emphasized the importance of annual rabies vaccinations to maintain immunity among pets. Officials sent samples from animal carcasses to the Ministry of Agriculture for rabies testing, with 22 cases submitted from last year (2024) to this year (2025). While 3 ferret badgers tested negative last year (2024), 2 cases from Taoyuan District tested positive this year (2025). Meanwhile, a bat from Daliao District tested negative."

The resurgence of rabies among ferret badgers has prompted local governments to enhance vaccination programs for pets and advise the public to avoid contact with wild animals.
