Goa has registered the 1st case of human rabies death in the last 5 years, an official of Directorate of Health Services said.

"Pet dog owners have to make sure that their pets are vaccinated. The stray dogs have to be vaccinated by the Animal Husbandry Department. What happens is that sometimes if there is a dog bite and somebody delays vaccination or delays reporting to the hospital, then there can be some cases. This is what happened in the month of September [2023]. One patient was diagnosed with rabies, and he succumbed to the disease," National Rabies Control Programme (NRCP) nodal officer Dr Prashant Suryawanshi told reporters.

The state had not reported human rabies cases since September 2017.

Dr Suryawanshi said that of late, the state has started [monitoring] cases in areas like Pernem, Bicholim, Dodamarg, and Siolim.

"Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Department and Mission Rabies have started the vaccination programme,'' he said.

After a fall in the canine rabies cases by over 90%, the Goa government notified the state as a rabies-controlled state in 2021. The state government has spent almost INR 5 crore [INR 50 million, USD
600 412] on the rabies control programme.

In June 2021, Goa was the 1st Indian state to be declared a "Rabies Controlled Area" (https://missionrabies.com/projects/india/). Mission Rabies Program, launched in Goa in 2013, contributed significantly to achieve that status. Since 2018, no human rabies case has been reported from the state until September last year (2023), when a fatal rabies case was detected, as indicated in the news report above. This new human case attributed to a dog bite indicates that the virus is still circulating in the canine population, and therefore, all susceptible dogs in the state must be vaccinated against the disease to achieve the state's status of dog-mediated rabies elimination even before 2030. - Mod.PKB
