A 28-year-old man in Hoa Binh Province, northern Viet Nam, has died of rabies after failing to receive rabies vaccine and anti-rabies serum following a stray dog bite over a month and a half prior, local health authorities confirmed on Tuesday [8 Apr 2025].

ベトナム北部Hoa Binh省の28歳男性が、約1ヶ月半前に野良犬に咬まれた後、狂犬病ワクチンと狂犬病抗血清の投与を受けなかったため、狂犬病で死亡したことを現地の保健当局が火曜日［2025年4月8日］に確認した。

The victim, identified as V.V.V., was working at a construction site in Bao Hieu Commune, Yen Thuy District, on 15 Feb [2025] when he was bitten on the left hand by a stray dog weighing around 6 kg [13 lb]. The animal fled the scene and has not been found since.

被害者であるV.V.V.氏は、2025年2月15日、 Yen Thuy 郡 Bao Hieu 村にある建設現場で作業中、約6kg（13ポンド）の野良犬に左手を咬まれた。当該動物は現場から逃走し、現在も行方不明となっている。

Despite the bite drawing blood, the victim self-treated the wound and did not seek medical treatment or post-exposure rabies vaccination.

By 27 Mar [2025], V. began exhibiting symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, mild shortness of breath, and excessive salivation. Despite being treated at several local health facilities, his condition deteriorated rapidly.

He was eventually transferred to the Center for Tropical Diseases of Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi, where 2 PCR tests confirmed rabies infection. Doctors explained the dire prognosis to the family, who chose to bring him home for care. He passed away on 3 Apr [2025].

Local authorities also reported another alarming case on 18 Mar [2025] involving a different stray dog in the same commune. This 10 kg [22 lb] animal exhibited unusual behavior and ran to 3 households, about 500 m [1640 ft] from where V. worked, where it attacked 3 smaller dogs and bit a 15-year-old boy before fleeing. Two of the bitten dogs died the next day, and the third went missing. The teenager, identified as B.K.D., then received rabies vaccination and remains in stable condition.

The incidents prompted an urgent response from the provincial Department of Health, which put together a joint inspection team to assess and monitor potential rabies outbreaks in Bao Hieu. Though no confirmed animal rabies cases were previously recorded in the commune, these events have triggered new preventive measures.

20 rabies-related deaths in Q1/2025

In the first 3 months of 2025, Viet Nam recorded 20 human deaths from rabies across 13 provinces, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.

Meanwhile, over 80 animals with suspected rabies infection were culled in 22 provinces.

Last Saturday [5 Apr 2025], 5 people in Vung Tau City of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, southern Viet Nam, had to seek medical treatment after being bitten by a free-ranging dog with suspected rabies.

先週土曜日（2025年4月5日）、ベトナム南部Ria-Vung Tauバリア・ブンタウ省のVung Tau市において、狂犬病の疑いがある放し飼いの犬に咬まれた5人が、医療措置を受けるため病院に搬送されました。

The dog, of unknown ownership, was seen roaming freely and displaying unusual behavior, including excessive drooling, an open mouth, and high aggression. It bit 5 residents, including children, and attacked 2 other dogs before being killed by locals to prevent further harm.

この所有者が不明の犬は、自由に徘徊し、異常な行動を示していた。具体的には、過剰な流涎、口を開けたままの状態、および高い攻撃性が見られた。この犬は、子供を含む5人の住民を咬み、他の2頭の犬を攻撃した後、さらに被害を拡大するのを防ぐため、地元住民によって射殺された。

["Rabies, despite being entirely preventable, remains a significant public health concern in the Asia-Pacific Region. The disease is predominantly transmitted by domestic dogs; it is almost invariably fatal once clinical signs appear. Successful rabies control includes: (i) prompt access to post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) following an exposure, including thorough wound washing, a series of rabies vaccines, and in some cases, rabies immunoglobulin (RIG)/rabies monoclonal antibodies (RmAbs); (ii) mass dog vaccination to prevent disease transmission at its source; and (iii) community awareness and engagement. The circumstance surrounding this event could be investigated as the stray dog bite was probably known to other construction co-workers who may opt for sending the case for proper treatment. - Mod.ST
