A man who traded and slaughtered dogs in Gia Lai Province in Viet Nam's Central Highlands succumbed to rabies after getting a dog bite and did not get vaccinated over a month earlier, the provincial Center for Disease Control reported on Monday [3 Feb 2025].

ベトナム中部高原地帯のGia Lai省で犬の売買と屠殺を行っていた男性が、犬に咬まれた後1か月を過ぎてもワクチン接種を受けていなかったため、狂犬病を発症したと、同省の疾病対策センターが2025年2月3日（月）に報告した。

The victim, [NVC], a 73-year-old resident in Ia Hrung Commune, Ia Grai District, was a dog trader and butcher. Initial investigations revealed that over a month ago, while catching a dog for slaughter, [NVC] was bitten on his thumb, causing a bleeding wound. The dog's owner could not be identified, as [NVC] bought dogs from various households.

被害者であるNVC（73歳）は、Ia Grai県、Ia Hrung地区の住民で、犬の売買と屠殺を生業としていた。初期の調査によると、1か月以上前、屠殺用の犬を捕まえている際に、NVCは親指を咬まれ、出血する傷を負った。NVCはさまざまな家庭から犬を買い取っていたため、犬の所有者は特定できなかった。

Neglecting the injury, [NVC] only washed the wound with water and did not seek rabies vaccination. In the following days, he developed a fever and purchased medication from a pharmacy, but his condition did not improve.

NVCは傷を放置し、傷口を水で洗っただけで、狂犬病の予防接種は受けなかった。その後発熱し、薬局で薬を購入したが、症状は改善しなかった。

On 25 Jan 2025, [NVC] experienced fatigue, chills, body aches, loss of appetite, fear of wind, and insomnia. His family took him to the Gia Lai General Hospital the next day with typical rabies symptoms such as fear of wind, water, and bright light, difficulty swallowing, inability to eat or drink, and panic. Doctors diagnosed him with rabies.

2025年1月25日、NVCは疲労、悪寒、身体の痛み、食欲不振、風に対する恐れ、不眠を経験した。翌日、風、水、明るい光に対する恐怖、嚥下困難、飲食不能、パニックなどの典型的な狂犬病の症状が見られた彼を彼の家族はGia Lai総合病院に連れて行った。医師は彼を狂犬病と診断した。

The family decided to have him treated at the Gia Lai General Hospital. However, [NVC]'s condition worsened, and he eventually passed away.

家族は彼をGia Lai総合病院で治療することにした。しかし、NVCの容態は悪化し、最終的に死亡した。

Upon receiving information about the case, local health authorities advised the patient's family about the risk of exposure to rabies secretions and preventive measures for family members.

The Ia Grai District Medical Center also conducted community outreach to raise awareness about the dangers of rabies, the importance of post-exposure vaccination, and responsible pet ownership.

["Immediate medical attention following suspected rabies exposure is critical. Medical care following a rabies exposure is called post-exposure prophylaxis or PEP. PEP includes wound care, a dose of human rabies immune globulin (HRIG), and a series of 4 or 5 rabies vaccines, which must be administered as soon as possible after exposure. This care is vital to prevent the disease from developing. It is nearly 100% effective if administered promptly"

狂犬病感染の疑いがある場合、速やかに医療処置を受けることが極めて重要である。狂犬病感染後の医療処置は、曝露後予防またはPEPと呼ばれる。 PEPには、傷の処置、ヒト狂犬病免疫グロブリン（HRIG）の投与、4～5回の狂犬病ワクチン接種が含まれる。これらの処置は、曝露後できるだけ早く実施しなければならない。発症を防ぐためには、この処置が不可欠である。速やかに実施すれば、ほぼ100%有効である。

Community outreach for awareness campaigns could prioritize dog meat sellers who are also involved in dog slaughtering. The victim's dog bite may have been known to other family members who could have advised him on proper post-exposure prophylaxis. It is also noteworthy to clarify whether the geographical and/or financial barriers ompounded his care-seeking behavior. - Mod.ST

地域社会への啓発キャンペーンでは、犬の屠殺にも関与している犬肉販売業者を優先的に取り上げることを検討すべきである。被害者の犬の咬傷については、他の家族にも知られており、適切な暴露後予防措置について助言を受けることができた可能性がある。また、地理的および／または経済的な障壁が、彼の治療を求める行動を妨げたかどうかを明らかにすることも重要である。- モデレーター.ST
