An 18-year-old young man died Friday [4 Apr 2025] at the Ikhwa Toubal Hospital in Mila, due to rabies, after being scratched by a cat he had taken into his home.

According to reliable sources, the incident occurred on 26 Mar [2025], but the victim's parents did not rush to take him to the clinic to receive the necessary vaccine in time, which led to the deterioration of his health, and he took his last breath today [4 Apr 2025] at the Ikhwa Toubal Hospital in Mila.

According to a well-informed source, specialized medical services are working to contain the disease and are investigating the victim's surroundings and family to identify the source of the infection, especially since the victim used to tend livestock and was in constant contact with dogs. The same source added that the public prosecutor of the Mila court ordered an autopsy to determine the true origin of the rabies infection.

They are urging citizens to remain vigilant and avoid contact with dogs, cats, and other animals during this period, and to seek medical care immediately in case of dog bites or cat scratches.

["In Algeria, rabies is considered a major zoonosis; therefore, a national rabies control program was initiated in 1996 focusing on the elimination of the free-roaming dog population (by culling, despite that it's against the WHO/OIE recommendations), and mandatory vaccination of all domestic carnivores. Nevertheless, the incidence of human and animal rabies cases remained steady with an average of 20 human deaths per year, and an average of 120 000 people are exposed to rabies yearly and eventually go through PEP procedure"
