The livestock community of Esmeraldas is on alert due to the confirmation of positive cases of bovine rabies in the northern area of Esmeraldas. This disease, highly contagious and potentially fatal to humans, has generated concern among health authorities and local producers.

According to recent reports, the National Animal Health Service (Senasa), the governing body for animal health in Esmeraldas, has confirmed through laboratory analysis the presence of bovine rabies in several cantons in the northern area. Although the exact cantons have not been specified, it is known that the disease is spreading rapidly throughout the region.

All producers are urged to vaccinate their animals as a crucial preventive measure. Vaccination not only protects livestock, but also significantly reduces the risk of transmission to humans.

Bovine rabies is transmitted primarily by the blood-sucking bat, also known as the vampire bat. This bat feeds on blood and can spread the disease by biting infected animals and then healthy ones.

In Misiones, Senasa established sanitary containment tasks after confirming, through laboratory diagnosis, a positive case of parasitic rabies in cattle, in an establishment located in Colonia Yuquery, town of Garuhape.

In response to this situation, the agency implemented the health protocol for reportable diseases, which requires the vaccination of all susceptible species -- cattle, horses, goats, pigs, and sheep –on the affected farm and those located within a 10 km [6.2 mi] radius of the outbreak. It also prohibits the affected property and all production units within the aforementioned radius.

[Rabies is a fatal disease. Once an animal has this disease, it does not recover, but poses a threat to the human caretakers and to other animals.
