The Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) of Negros Occidental has noted 13 confirmed canine rabies cases among dogs in eight localities in the province from January to May 2021. The figure was 39 percent higher compared to 6 cases in the same period in 2020.

Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena said the increase was attributed to restrictions imposed since last year [2020] due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

Decena said this resulted in only 46.95 percent or 126 484 heads of dogs vaccinated from the total population of 273 000 heads.

"Ideally, the vaccination must be 70 percent or 191 100 dogs to attain herd immunity," he added.

PVO records showed that as of May 2021, the top 3 local government units (LGUs) with the highest number of canine rabies positive cases are Himamaylan city followed by Victorias city and Cauayan town,respectively.

The PVO, through its Provincial Veterinary District Field Units, in coordination with these LGUs, conducted immediate massive vaccination.

Other localities with rabies-positive cases among dogs this year [2021] included Toboso, EB Magalona, Silay city, Pontevedra, and Sagay city.

A total of 74 781 dogs were vaccinated provincewide against rabies, serving 47 506 dog owners.

A total of 468 stray dogs, meanwhile, were impounded by LGUs with a dog impounding facility.

Of the number, 437 were terminated and 31 were redeemed and adopted. Decena said the public is encouraged to follow standard protocols by having their dogs vaccinated at least annually against rabies.

He said owners should not allow their dogs to be on the streets to prevent contamination and the spread of rabies. Other measures included dog population control like spaying and neutering, compulsory leashing, and movement control such as dog impounding.
また、狂犬病の汚染や蔓延を防ぐため、飼い主は犬を路上に放してはならないと述べた。その 他の対策としては、避妊・去勢手術などの犬の個体数管理、強制捕獲(lashing)、犬の収容な どの移動管理などがある。
The province is targeting to buy additional rabies vaccines to increase vaccination targets and reduce active cases, Decena said. He added while in cases of dog bites, victims are advised to seek appropriate medical attention as soon as possible since rabies [in almost all cases] has no treatment once the symptoms start to manifest.
州は、ワクチン接種の対象を増やし、陽性症例を減らすために、狂犬病ワクチンの追加購入を 目指している、と Decena 氏は述べた。また、犬に噛まれた場合、被害者はできるだけ早く適切 な医療機関を受診することが推奨される。狂犬病は一旦症状が出ると治療法がないからだ。

Department of Health is supporting canine vaccination to eliminate human rabies through collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, funding canine vaccines, and covering treatment costs for human patients. While many areas are still implementing control activities, newly declared rabies-free zones have become models to neighboring communities and are working to maintain their status."
