Prince Edward Island has recorded its 1st rabies case in an animal in more than a decade.

A bat found in a Queens County home tested positive for the virus at a Canadian Food Inspection Agency lab in Ottawa on 13 Sep [2023]. It's the 1st documented case of rabies on the Island since 2009.

The Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative for the Atlantic region, which runs the bat hotline, submitted the animal to the CFIA. Regional director Megan Jones said crews were called in because the bat was behaving abnormally.

Jones said bats are small animals and people might not notice if they've been bitten or scratched by one.

Unlike most other mammals in which rabies is fatal, Jones said some bats can survive with the disease, so any of them could be carrying the virus at any time.

But she added it's rare for humans to contract rabies from a bat, and people shouldn't be concerned.

Bats are often found roosting in people's attics, Jones said. If Islanders find a bat in their home and there's no way the bat had any contact with humans, she recommends contacting a pest control company. Otherwise, residents should call her organization's toll-free bat hotline or contact the provincial Fish and Wildlife Division office nearest them.

The only way to reliably test for rabies in bats requires the animals to be dead. Bats are endangered in P.E.I., but Jones said public health comes first.

Douglas County health officials are warning residents to take precautions around animals they do not know after a stray kitten in the county was found to be infected with rabies.

[Please recall that any mammal can transmit the rabies virus.
While bats are often at fault for transmitting this usually lethal virus, this posting demonstrates some bats may be rabid without any human exposure, or potential animal exposure, except perhaps the roost mates.
Nevertheless, it is appropriate to issue a reminder regarding bats, who certainly have a necessary place in the ecosystem.
However, there is really no excuse for our pets not to be protected with a vaccine. If you are taking your pet on a hike, or on vacation with you, then it should be part of your pre-trip checklist. Even if you are residing at home, your pet needs to be vaccinated. The assumption of an indoor pet not needing a vaccine is faulty. There are multiple case reports of bats getting into a house, or a fox or skunk getting into a home and biting pets and people.
Unfortunately in this case, it appears to have been quite a young kitten, so our guard should still be up regarding the vaccine status of the animal. If you are uncertain if your young pet is old enough to receive a vaccine, please check with your local veterinarian regarding the age for vaccines and general health issues you should be aware of regarding your pet.
Check with your veterinarian on when your pet should be vaccinated. Some vaccines are for one year and some for 3 years. Typically, the 1st vaccine may be for one year and subsequent vaccines may be for 3 years. But it is essential for you to protect your pet and yourself.
Consult your veterinarian regarding your pets. If you are exposed to a rabid animal possibly having rabies, then clean the wound with soap and water and seek medical attention immediately. - Mod.TG]
