A wild otter faced off with a dog and person off Marlin Drive in Jupiter over the weekend, biting both. After being caught by Animal Care and Control, the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) Laboratory confirmed the aquatic mammal was positive for rabies. There was no mention in the news release of the bitten dog or person's condition or if either required medical attention.

Officials are warning residents in the area to stay away from any wildlife, including feral or community cats. The FDOH news release is also asking people to report "suspicious animals" to Animal Care and Control.

The FDOH gave the following advice:

- Keep rabies vaccinations up to date for all pets.

- If you or your pet are bitten by a wild animal, seek medical or veterinary assistance immediately and contact Animal Care & Control.

- Call your local animal control agency to remove any stray animals from your neighborhood.

- Spay or neuter your pets to help reduce the number of unwanted pets which may not be properly cared for or regularly vaccinated.

- Do not handle, feed or unintentionally attract wild animals with open garbage cans or litter.

- Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home.

- Teach children never to handle unfamiliar animals, wild or domestic, even if they appear friendly.

- Prevent bats from entering living quarters or occupied spaces in homes, churches, schools and other similar areas where they might come in contact with people and pets.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) confirmed a fox found near South Deepwood and South Persimmon Ford Roads in Johnsonville, South Carolina, has tested positive for rabies. One person was exposed and has been referred to their healthcare provider.

The fox was submitted to DHEC's laboratory for testing on 3 Oct 2023, and was confirmed to have rabies on 4 Oct 2023. If you believe you, someone you know, or your pets have come in contact with this fox or another animal potentially having rabies, please call DHEC's Public Health Florence office during normal business hours (8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday) or after hours and on holidays on the respective number.

Please report all animal bites, scratches, and exposures to potentially rabid animals to DHEC.

"It is very important for you to seek medical attention if you have been exposed to a wild, stray or domestic animal," said Terri McCollister, Rabies Program director. "The rabies virus is found in the saliva of infected animals and can be transmitted through a bite, scratch, broken skin and the mucous membranes of your eyes, nose or mouth. Immediately wash the affected area with plenty of soap and water. Contact your local Public Health office for further guidance."

It is important to keep pets up to date on their rabies vaccination, as this is one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect against the disease. This fox is the 4th animal in Florence County to test positive for rabies in 2023. There have been 68 cases of rabid animals statewide this year. Since 2002, South Carolina has averaged approximately 148 positive cases a year. In 2022, one of the 83 confirmed rabies cases in South Carolina was in Florence County.

[We don't often write about rabid otters, but it highlights the situation of any mammal, anywhere can be exposed and can transmit this disease. We must be on alert for any animal with even slightly unusual behavior. Please recall any mammal can transmit the rabies virus.

However, there is really no excuse for our pets not to be protected with a vaccine. If you are taking your pet on a hike, or vacation with you, then it should be part of your pre-trip check list. Even if you are residing at home, your pet needs to be vaccinated. The assumption of an indoor pet not needing a vaccine is a fallacy. There are multiple case reports of bats getting into a house, or a fox or skunk getting into a home and biting pets and people.

Check with your veterinarian on when your pet should be vaccinated. Some vaccines are for 1 year and some for 3 years. Typically, the first vaccine may be for 1 year and subsequent vaccines may be for 3 years. But it is essential for you protect your pet and yourself.
