A Fort Good Hope dog having had contact with a wild fox has tested positive for rabies, the NWT chief environmental health officer says.

More information about rabies, including signs in animals like dogs, is available from the Department of Health and Social Services. Don't touch any animal you think may have rabies, and instead report the incident to your local Department of Environment and Natural Resources office immediately.

A total of 6 people and 6 animals were exposed to a rabid cat in Marlboro County, according to the South Carolina Dept. of Health and Environmental Control.

On 17 Feb 2023, the Stafford County Health Department confirmed an orange and white colored, short hair cat collected on 15 Feb 2023 from the 100 block of Ottinger Lane, off Widewater Road in Stafford County, was positive for rabies.

Mount Rogers Health District confirms 2 cases of animal rabies

Two cases of rabies were identified in Carroll County last week.

According to the Mount Rogers Health District, on 22 Feb 2023 a skunk on the 300 block of Hunters Ridge Road in Dugspur entered a pen with a dog and the resident and displayed suspicious behavior. The skunk was collected and tested positive for rabies. The following day on 23 Feb 2023 a 2nd skunk was observed displaying unusual behavior in the same vicinity. This animal was tested Friday [24 Feb 2023] and was positive result for rabies as well.

The Carroll County Health Department asks anyone who may have come into contact with a skunk in this area to call the health department or contact the area sheriff's office.

• Teach children to avoid contact with wild animals and pets they are not familiar with.
• Do not handle sick, injured or dead animals.
• Keep wild animals out of homes by capping chimneys with screens and blocking openings in attics, cellars and porches. Ensure trash cans have tight fitting lids.
• If you are bitten by a wild or stray animal, do not panic. Wash the wound(s) thoroughly with warm soapy water and contact animal control, your doctor or the health department for further recommendations.

[Rabies is a deadly disease to animals, and to humans.

There is a preventative vaccine for animals, obtained through your veterinarian. Depending upon the rabies burden in the area, it may be mandated annually, or after initial vaccination it may be given to your pet every 3 years. This time interval is dependent upon the rabies burden in your area. So please follow your veterinarian's recommendations.
