Just 2 months into the year [2025], the Department of Health (DOH) has recorded a total of 55 deaths nationwide due to rabies. "This number -- from 1 Jan to 1 Mar 2025 -- is 39% lower compared to the 90 cases recorded during the same period last year [2024]," said the DOH.

"The case fatality rate for rabies is 100%," said the DOH. The DOH added that this was similar to what happened in 2024, when all 426 rabies cases recorded for the whole year resulted in death.

Rabies is a viral infection that can be transmitted to humans through animal bites or even scratches, most commonly by dogs and cats. Its symptoms include fever, headache, and general weakness before progressing into anxiety, confusion, agitation, hallucinations, and hydrophobia.
狂犬病は、動物に咬まれたり、引っ掻かれたりすることで人に感染するウイルス感染症である。最も一般的な感染源は犬や猫である。発症すると、発熱、頭痛、全身の脱力感などの症状が現れ、不安、混乱、興奮、幻覚、恐水症へと進行する。
Because of this, Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa called on the public to make sure that their pets get anti-rabies shots every year. The public was also advised to avoid interactions with stray animals, especially aggressive ones.
このため、Teodoro Herbosa保健大臣は、ペットに毎年狂犬病予防接種を受けさせるよう国民に呼びかけた。また、放浪動物、特に攻撃的な動物との接触を避けるよう国民に勧告した。
In case of getting bitten or scratched, victims are advised to immediately wash the wound with soap and running water and to go to the nearest health center or Animal Bite and Treatment Center.
咬まれたり引っ掻かれたりした場合は、被害者はすぐに傷口を石鹸と流水で洗い、最寄りの保健センターまたは動物咬傷治療センターに行くよう勧められている。
