The City Veterinary Office (CVO) is calling all the "irresponsible" pet owners to have their dogs vaccinated after Cebu City observed an "alarming" number of dog rabies cases from January to June 2024. Utlang said on Wednesday [6 Jun 2024] that in 2023, the city recorded 17 rabies cases for the entire year. However, this year [2024], they recorded 14 cases as of 5 Jun already. Utlang said that this number was already "alarming" considering that December was still months away.

Based on the initial data, these cases can be found in 11 barangays in Cebu City: 10 of these have a single case of dog rabies while only Lahug recorded the highest number, which is 4. The other barangays that have one case are Mabolo, Basak San Nicolas, Tisa, Cogon Pardo, Bulacao, Carreta, Tinago, Barrio Luz, Ermita, and Zapatera. One of the factors that Utlang attributed to the rise of cases was the impounding.

At least 160 people have died of rabies since January [2024], a case fatality rate of 94.67 percent, according to the Department of Health. The DOH said it recorded 169 human rabies cases, 9 of which are still being verified. The reported cases as of 11 May were 13 percent higher compared to the 150 reported during the same period last year [2023]. A total of 156, or 92 percent of the cases, were bitten by dogs, 10 by cats, and 3 by other animals.

Soccsksargen posted the highest number of cases at 21 followed by Calabarzon and Bicol with 18 cases each.

The DOH said rabies is preventable, adding that vaccination is the most effective protection for animals and humans.

"Given the high percentage of cases involving dogs and cats, it is imperative that pet owners ensure their animals are vaccinated against rabies at 3 months old and every year thereafter," the DOH said. "This not only protects the animals but also significantly reduces the risk of transmission to humans."
